Have you ever experienced that state of limbo where you’ve discovered a new band, dug their sound but have no idea if it means they can actually perform live? If you’re like me, then the answer is certainly yes. To ensure you avoid disappointment here are a few bands you can find absolutely killing it at your local.
#1 Residual – The Evelyn, VIC – 19th Nov
Residual are a rock inspired four-piece who have already nailed the fine art of atmosphere building throughout their performances. With a lack of a better description, vocalist Sam Burtt aptly mimics the sound of Matt Corby and uses that skill to elevate Residual’s performances. Their recent release Haunt is a mere sample of what they can achieve live.
Into The Wild know their sound, live their sound and perform it effortlessly at each opportunity they get. If you favour rock favourites like the Foo Fighters then these boys will certainly give you something to dance to. During a show it isn’t rare for them to throw a cover or two in for good measure and who honestly doesn’t enjoy a good cover every now and then? Before you take the dive, Into The Wild released Skin, their debut EP earlier this year.
#3 I Know Leopard – Miami Marketta, QLD – 24th Nov
If you appreciate indie pop then you may have already come across I Know Leopard. Every now and again they may pop up on Triple J and are currently touring with Holy Holy. Their cool demeanour creates a space for you to sway along to, as if you’re lost in another world. Live shows don’t always need to be high octane powerhouses and I Know Leopard are great alternative to that notion.
#4 The Jensens see for yourself at Ding Dong Lounge, VIC – 9th Dec
True advocates for garage-pop, The Jensens operate in one season only; that is summer. The road typically serves as their second home so there is a good chance you may get to see them live. Their playfulness on stage promotes an easy-going feeling that’ll have you jiving (if people still do that) until the early hours of the morning. Before seeing them live, give Everybody Talks a spin and let the good times roll.
#5 Betty & Oswald catch them at Lost Paradise, NSW – 29th Dec
If you are looking for a live performance to lose yourself in, then seeing Betty & Oswald will be right up your alley. Throwing back to a calmer time with their 70’s inspired chilled out sound. You will have the blissful experience of simply being, no need to think or do, just sit back and enjoy the music. Betty & Oswald have had the pleasure of taking their sound to Canada and are currently gearing up for the festival season with Lost Paradise as their first stop. If you hear they’re playing at your local venue, trust me, you’d want to check them out.
Hopefully you’ll have time to check some of the bands mentioned above. Who knows, they could become one of the next juggernauts in Australian music.
