So last week it was reported that the Fair Work Commission increased the national minimum wage to $719.20 a week. Like heck, I don’t know about you, but that influx of money isn’t something I’ve seen for a while. So let’s not deny that this seems like a pretty sweet deal, but what does it all really mean?
Well, to break it down a little more, this wage increase leaves you with another $24.30.. if you work a 38 hour week. And the actual minimum wage will be upped to $18.93 an hour once the calendar hits July first. Again, not seeing a problem here, to be honest. Every little bit counts.
With an increased minimum wage needing to be paid, many were concerned that designated hours would be culled. And yep, considering a lot of us can’t afford to pay our hectically priced rent, our worries are justified in this circumstance. The Australian Council of Trade Unions were pushing for the increase to hit double that of the Fair Trade Commission, saying that it would assist us with the rising prices of living. However, such an increase was said to limit opportunities for employment for us youngins. And this right here, is why we can’t have nice things.. or the best of both worlds.
Nonetheless, the new wage is unlikely to impact our precious employment. So, congrats everyone, we can continue to live in monetary induced semi-stress, rather than full blown anxiety.
And If You’re Earning Above The Minimum Wage?
Well, to put it quite frankly, none of this is really going to affect your living standards or make them any greater. Apologies, didn’t mean to burst your bubble, peeps. In fact, there are about 80 percent of us who are earning more than the minimum.. So, I mean, go us.. right?
