5 Movies Based on Video Games In The Works

Video games turned movies can be a little hit and miss. You may not have seen the awful take on beloved Super Mario Bros or the adventures of Ryu adapted poorly in Street Fighter films. Perhaps all the Lara Croft films featuring Angelina Jolie blend together for you, at least they do for me. Video games pull you into another world and hand you the steering wheel, traversing unknown landscapes and living outside your own body. Transferring that engagement to films can be tricky to say the least. But we still have hope that our favourite player one’s will come to life. Here’s 5 films in the pipeline based on your favourite trigger happy games.

#1 Assassin’s Creed – 2016

Michael Fassbender’s turn as Aguilar the skydiving hero of yesteryear is sure to be epic. He’s the right amount of ambivalent olden day hitman and tortured soul. Dropped into the Spanish inquisition he navigates a time 500 years ago with the memories of  ancestors to guide him. Action packed, superb graphics and a portrayal that looks authentic to the game. We just wish Kristen Bell’s vocal presence in the game transferred to the movie, a small complaint amongst praise.

#2 Tomb Raider – 2017

A remake starring Alicia Vikander is set to reimagine the Tomb Raider game in a grittier fashion. Based on the game from 2013 this fresh vision will tackle Lara Croft’s first adventures taking on her origin story. Don’t expect too many similarities between Angelina Jolie’s take on the archeologist adventurer and Vikander’s, markedly an untested Croft coming to find her strengths. Can’t wait.

#3 Splinter Cell – 2017

It may have been in the works since 2012 but fret not, Tom Hardy is still tied to the project. Taking on the role of Sam Fisher, Hardy has been working with the studio and the game designers Ubisoft to make sure the portrayal is truly ace. Unlike other gaming heavyweights Ubisoft starts with a lead actor in mind and builds the script around them to ensure the character is identifiable to game players. Bane-esque or lit by the fire of fury road, you best believe this one is worth waiting for.

#4 Temple Run – TBA

Everyone’s favourite mobile app where your fingers become Indiana Jones, is being turned into an animated film. Keen? We certainly are. Harry Potter and Gravity producer David Heyman will bring the adventure game to life, which is surely a good sign. The game isn’t steeped in a deep plot but that leaves Heyman to create a new and exciting extension of the explorer’s travels. Expect an expansion on the protagonist stealing a mythical idol and then is chased by demonic forces. Not just another steal and run storyline.

#5 The Last of Us – TBA

With Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones fame set to take on the role of Ellie, we will sit patiently for this one to come together. Fans have cited Hugh Jackman as an ideal man to play heroic Joel, as the duo traipse about a transformed world in search of survival. Josh Brolin was also thrown into the ring. To conquer the post apocalyptic world of The Last of Us you need someone as intense as those two to carry it off. Oh and if things go well expect a sequel to follow on with the games.
