It’s most likely we all have songs that really get us motivated or make us feel invincible. It could be that bass line to keep you moving or that catchy lyric that becomes your standard ‘feel like a boss’ mantra. Whether it be this or that is irrelevant. It’s the very beautiful fact that a song or tune can make us ‘feel like a boss’ in the first place; whatever it may be.
#1 Tunde Adebimpe – Speedline Miracle Masterpiece (feat. Sal P & Sinkane)
“You got the gall, you got the nerve to come after me…coming fast, but I’m burning at hyperspeed”
For all you gamers out there, you might have noticed this melodic piece in ‘GTA V’ while flying down the streets of Los Santos. If not, you may know Tunde Adebimpe as the frontman of the band ‘TV on the Radio‘. He released this track in 2015 and I’m surprised more people didn’t lose their shit over it. From the sporadic vocals and catchy lyrics, all the way to the funky bass line and sharp synths, you can’t help but enjoy this piece. It evokes a feeling of being impervious to criticism. It’s as if you’re speeding past all distraction and the little competitions of the everyday. There’s no need to compete because you’ve already won; and that’s all a part of the “miracle masterpiece”.
#2 FIDLAR – West Coast
“Checked out, I’m waiting for the weekend”
Most of us enjoy a good tune to get us excited for the end of a Friday (or whenever our ‘Friday’ may be in the week) and fling us into the weekend. In the majority of my experience, I haven’t seen people feel more like a boss until that Friday afternoon hits. This track by FIDLAR makes you feel like you’re charging towards the end of the week. It’s a classic ‘live for the weekend’ song because it poses the ups and downs of a weekend as one whole process. You can’t drink too much without having ‘barfed on’ your shadow. That’s the beauty of it.
#3 Death Grips – Beware
“…I am the beast I worship…”
This is such a primal tune. It’s heavy, grimy and raw. It’s not your usual pop standard for ‘feeling like a boss’. However, it’s an honest dose of self-expression and self-empowerment. The first time I heard it, it instilled pure confidence. While tediously working through an assignment one morning, I clicked on the ‘recommended YouTube video’ list. By midday I was done. It’s all about seizing the day and ultimately believing in yourself.
#4 DZ Deathrays – Shred For Summer
“I don’t care it’s summer time…shred the grip on my guitar”
Has an Aussie ever felt more like a boss having uttered these words? Well, maybe if it involved beer. Nevertheless, this track just encapsulates Summer. It’s around holiday season and breaks up the employment season; by being able to let your hipster bun down and enjoy the simple things. To enjoy the simple things is to feel like a boss.
#5 M.I.A – Paper Planes
“Everyone’s a winner, we’re making our fame”
This song enables any moment, whether slow or fast, to be enjoyed with boss-like shoulder shakes on the spot. The bass and guitar riffs blend in perfectly to get you moving. Its most prominent use was in the trailer for the film ‘Pineapple Express’. It’s great for performing even the most basic tasks ‘like a boss’. Need to take your plate to the sink? Why not do a little jig on your way over. “All i wanna do is [clink clink clink clink] and rinse all my plates!”
