The #NSWfires have been devastating, with hundreds of koalas massacred, several people dead, dozens missing, and many injured. We’ve talked about our anger that the Morrison Government has allowed it to get this bad, but now let’s get back to human experience.
The photos that people are posting on Twitter are, quite frankly, apocalyptic. It’s crazy to see this kind of tragedy so close, but it’s important too. Here are some pics that encapsulate the everyday Aussie experience around these terrifying events.
The Smoke
Just imagine seeing this view from aboard a flight from Sydney to Brisbane as did Matt Hope, who took this photo.
The billowing smoke from the fires raging below.

This is Harrington on the mid north coast of #NSW right now – absolutely insane fire front.
Been holidaying at North Haven for most of my life and the whole area is getting smashed by #nswfires

There’s been some incredible snaps of the red, smoky glow along the Mid North Coast as fireys battle unprecedented bushfires. These images were taken at Corindi Beach, north of Coffs Harbour, by a resident earlier this evening. I’ve never seen anything like it #NSWfires pic.twitter.com/Bac2xBldgd

More from Mum at #PortMacquarie, crossing the Hastings River on the ferry. 50 shades of orange, where a whole lot of people get screwed over because we should have been dealing with determinental anthropogenic #ClimateChange 4 decades ago, when we first knew about it. #NSWfires pic.twitter.com/fWDFsHk2yA

The Wildlife
3 people have died so far, with more people missing and over 150 houses have been destroyed. But it’s not only affecting people. Animal habitats are being destroyed and they can’t escape. Over 350 koalas (endangered species) were killed in 1 area alone! #NSWFires #BushFires pic.twitter.com/O6SZkwsgys

WHAT A SAVE!
Firefighters from Taree @FRNSW saved these little guys from a property which had been directly impacted by fire! They managed to navigate the main fire front and were able to seek shelter until help arrived! A small win on such a catastrophic day! ❤️#nswfires pic.twitter.com/WTNgayl20O— Val Schaefer (@schaefer_val) November 8, 2019

And The #NSWfires Keep Burning
…livin’ the Morrison/Berejiklian #philAUSophy
June2019 the #LNP cut funding to Fire/Rescue NSW @NSWFR by a massive 35.4 % plus $13M of expenses cuts

99.4% of NSW is in drought. The state is tinder-dry. The climate catastrophe is accelerating. Yet Gladys Berejiklian thought it was a good idea to cut the RFS budget by 75% this year?!
This is a failure of leadership. The govt must be held accountable. #nswpol #nswfires pic.twitter.com/ePdKhTP85F

Words fail me…
This follow up photo is from my friend Peter Laing of Dunbogan – north of Harrington – on the mid north coast of #NSW, as the fire front heads north through Diamond Head.
