York Street’s brand new restaurant and cocktail bar, Forty Licks, is opening its doors this month, and welcoming the avid foodies of Sydney into its grips. Forty Licks introduces an irresistible fusion of Australian and Vietnamese and it’s inviting you to try it.
The inspiration behind the new venue lies in the untouched natural landscape of Vietnam, settled amongst the hustle and bustle of Sydney City. The 75 seat venue features a bar, dining room and raised seated area, designed to mimic the tiered landscape of authentic Vietnamese rice fields.
Head chef Joel Manton, who spent years living in Hanoi and Saigon, will feature Vietnamese dishes with a modern twist. From sizzling kingfish and noodles in the style of Chả Cá Lã Vọng to braised eggplant and tofu with turmeric, the diverse menu brings dishes to suit all tastebuds.
“The food comes from my years as a chef living in Vietnam, our shared love of the cuisine, and of course strong family ties with Vietnam where my wife is from and where we’ve raised our young children. We want to show people something beyond Phở and rice paper rolls, by adding another dimension to the great Vietnamese food around the city and the suburbs.”
Kurtis Bosley, an award winning bartender, will be joining the Forty Licks team to curate a cocktail list to compliment the fragrance of Vietnamese food. The list so far includes extravagant and eclectic drinks such as Red Lotus with Secco Vermouth, Calvados, amaro, lemon, bitters & Bird’s Nest; and Hanoi Sour with bourbon, ginger liqueur, Chichi Morada, lemon & pecan bitters.
