Congresswomen Are Making History And We Bet Trump Isn’t Too Pleased

Diversity has risen over the past years in the US Congress, but no more so than this year, after Democrats have taken control. Women have started 2019 off with a political bang and we can bet our bottom dollar that Trump isn’t going to be too happy about it all.

Not only will a record number of women take seats in Congress, but more women of colour will also be creating a voice for themselves and their country. A total of 102 females will have been sworn into the 116th Congress, which differs hugely from the 87 that were part of the last house. 2 more women have also taken their seat in The Senate, taking the total up to 25.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman to serve in Congress at just 29 years old. And Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar are the first Muslim-American women to be elected. Omar was supported by those around her when she wore her hijab in Congress, having come a long way as a refugee from Kenya as a teen.

“23 years ago, from a refugee camp in Kenya, my father and I arrived at an airport in Washington DC. Today, we return to that same airport on the eve of my swearing in as the first Somali-American in Congress.”

The first Native-American women will also be elected into Congress. And also among the historic firsts, Sharice Davids (former MMA fighter) will be the first openly lesbian female representing Kansas whilst Krysten Sinema is Arizona’s first female senator, as well as its’ first openly bisexual.

Oath’s were taken on the Koran, as well as Law books instead of the traditional Bible. Marking a point in history for America towards diversity and acceptance for all. I don’t know about Trump’s opinion, but the barriers broken mark a pretty exciting 2019.
