Jurassic World has smasssssssssssshed box office records after the opening weekend of its global release. It pulled as Tyrannosaurial (sorry) $USD204.6 million, pushing it above The Avengers: Age of Ultron release earlier this year – and sitting it at second on the all-time list.
I was lucky to head out to IMAX Sydney on opening night for the blockbuster preview, and there are some pretty clear reasons why this beauty of a film is setting all types of records.
1. Nostalgia likes its 1993
So the thing that was done brilliantly in this film was the homage to the 1993 masterpiece. There were so many moments that take you back to the original film – but just enough to let it be its own film. It was all part of the wider marketing strategy no doubt, adding finesse elements that play on the nostalgia – ensuring all us fanboys and girls would be satisfied, but that newcomers would also be able to understand the plot.
2. Chris Pratt is a god
Seriously, someone buy this man a keg of golden elixir. Chris Pratt is fast becoming Hollywood’s leading man; and impressively, across many genres of film. Pratt is freaking hand crafted for this generation of movie-goer. He has the charm, humour, stature and – in Jurassic World – the Alpha is really added to the male. A modern Harrison Ford – and that comparison itself cannot be mentioned without some serious acclaim.
3. Dinosaurs eating people in HD, Widescreen, 3D – f*ck yes
While the acting may have slowly fell away chronologically during the first set of Jurassic films, the dinosaurs have never. And now if anything, they have hit the crescendo in JW. Add widescreen viewing, IMAX and 3D to the equation – and this becomes a visual orgy of graphical delight.
4. The finale
Okay look, I’m trying hard to not reveal spoilers – and the picture above isn’t (directly) related to the finale. BUT. The ending of this film had me all teenage schoolboy seeing Christina Aguilera for the first time in the Genie in a Bottle music video. I didn’t really see it coming personally, but it was a beautiful set up and whether you are a fan of the old movies or not, this is the MVP moment of the film.
5. Modern themes get you all thinking and stuff
There are a lot of modern themes in Jurassic World – none more so than genetics and cloning. Add to that some military ideas and family concepts and you got some thinking to do outside all the dino munching. It makes the film family friendly, but importantly more than just a Michael Bay action-blast.
6. This aint the end
While I feel like the ending was a bit rushed, the franchise has been set up for a proper reboot. You won’t feel cheated, like that you have to watch the next film – but rather that it will be there regardless. And really, who can be upset with more futuristic vs prehistoric rumblings?
