Every Stage You’ll Go Through When You’re Of Moving Out Of Home

So you’re moving out. Me too! Packing up all your shit and flying the coop can be an intimidating experience. If you’re anything like me, this is the first time you’ve really had to do it. Trying to actually sort through all your stuff and working out what to take, what to leave, and what to get rid of can be hard. Not to mention, your mum quietly sobbing at your impending exit is super distracting.

So here’s every stage of moving out.

The “Okay, This is Happening” Stage

So, you’ve been thinking about it for a while, you’ve found the place you wanna live, and you’ve broken the news to your friends and family. Somewhere along that timeline comes a moment of “well fuck, I guess this is happening now.” Whether you’re moving out with friends, with bae, or just on your own, this realisation can hit you like a bus. All of a sudden it’s very real and there’s no going back.

The Sorting, Packing and Crying Stage

Maybe the crying is just me, but the sorting and packing stage is real. I’m gonna guess that you haven’t gone through every nook and crannie of your room in a while. God knows I haven’t. So sorting through all my shit has been a production. It’s also made me realise that I have inherited much more of a hoarding gene from my mother than I thought. Plus, when the fuck did I have the money to buy all of these tshirts??

The Trying On Every Hat I Own Stage

I mean, I don’t have to go into detail about this. It’s pretty self explanatory. But also, it’s a totally necessary stage of the process. Don’t forget the fashion show to show off the outfit you put together made entirely of pieces you haven’t worn since 2006.

The “Does Anyone have a Van I Can Borrow?” Stage

Moving all your stuff can be hard. You’ve got furniture, boxes, suitcases, the list goes on. And truck rental is expensive! And if you’re transporting it a long distance, it’s even more so. Lemme tell ya, when I looked into an interstate truck rental to the tune of $1500 for 36 hours I wept real tears. Finding something that you can fill with all your stuff can be rough.

The Moving Day Stage

Simultaneously the most exciting and terrifying day of all. The day you finally have everything in whatever vehicle(s) you managed to find and you’re officially on your way. The contracts are signed, the rooms have been allocated and all that’s left to do is actually get over there. Expect tears. If not from you, then probably from mum. Her baby is off into the big wide world. And if you are crying, you’re probably just thinking about all the bills you’re about to have to pay.

The Finally Settled and Ready For Life Stage

This one usually comes a little while after moving day. You’ve been in your new digs for a while now and it’s finally feeling like home. All you’re stuff is unpacked, you’ve bought some house plants that haven’t died yet, and your local Kmart cashier knows you by name from all the cute decor stuff you’ve been buying. Maybe you’re even getting a hang of budgeting. Finally settling into your new place is definitely the best stage. Welcome home.
