There is something inherently funny about the whole ‘Mean Tweets’ trend that has largely become popular due to the same name segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live! late night show.
Celebs reading out tweets directed at them from various members of the socially intelligent public – everything from crude, to homophobic, to sexual. And because they’re celebrities, you sort of go with the whole ‘well they’re celebs so it’s funny to see them take the piss out of themselves!’
“No one likes you. Do everyone a favour. Just kill yourself.”
The Canadian Safe School Network used the popular series as a result to send a very serious message about cyber bullying.
The video, which has compiled over one million views in a matter of days, showcases kids reading out ‘mean tweets’ about themselves. Now of course, whether or not the tweets are real or legitimate is up for debate – but the message is key.
Various tweets are read out one by one, in the same format as the segment on Jimmy Kimmel – with background laughs following the reading of each tweet. But as the video goes on, each tweet is greeted with less laughter, ultimately resulting in the last mean tweet read out by a young girl in which she reads:
“No one likes you. Do everyone a favour. Just kill yourself.”
It’s hard not to feel extremely guilty at this stage, as through our lives – especially in the very young days – it’s easy to say something like that without full intention or knowledge of the real impact it may have.
The vid is a tad hard to take in, but reiterates that cyber bullying is very real problem. Be the difference.
