How To Be In A Meaningful Relationship When You Are Busy AF

Relationships are hard. Throw in uni, work and a social life; suddenly you’re passing on date night just to keep your head above water.

As someone who has maintained a committed and exciting relationship for over two years, I have a few words of wisdom to offer on the whole ‘love’ thing, so here’s how to get the most out of your relationship when life gets too chaotic.

Be Practical

Mid-semester has everyone running around like headless-chooks so why not kill two birds with one stone and organise a study date. Not only will you get to enjoy each other’s company, but you can also act as each other’s personal cheerleader’s to make sure you’re both staying motivated and actually getting work done.

You can also totally sneak in a cheeky dinner date afterward to reward each other for your hard work.

Choose A Day, Any Day

Sit down with your partner and check out each other’s schedule’s to see if you have any free time in common.

This can be a bit tricky if you have commitments that vary each week like uni placement or work, but can still be really effective if you both choose a time at the beginning of each week to evaluate your free days.

You will get the most out of these designated times if you choose to actively engage with each other and minimise distractions like checking your phone or watching lengthy movies.

Keep It Simple

If your schedules absolutely will not sync, make spending time together as simple as a sleepover or even just hanging out at each other’s house.

Meaningful relationships shouldn’t revolve around going out all the time to make them feel special. The real test of a good relationship is if you can enjoy each other’s company in the quiet of your own home.

Three Or More Isn’t Always A Crowd

Though alone time is essential to all successful relationships, there’s definitely no harm in hanging out with friends or going on a double-date every now and again.

This is also a great way to work in socialising with each other’s friends while also making time for one another.

It’s All About Effort

At the end of the day, the most important way to maintain a healthy and loving relationship with your partner amidst a busy schedule is by letting them know that you care.

You don’t have to see each other all the time, just send your partner a few texts throughout the day and let each other know that you care about your relationship.

The killer of many relationships is when one party feels like the other has given up, so don’t let it get to that point. Make time for each other, no matter how short and simple then enjoy watching your relationship continue to grow.
