A growing number of media companies in the US plan to boycott filming in Georgia, after the state’s recent abortion legislation. Netflix, Warner Bros and Disney have all made public statements snubbing Georgia for their attack on women. I don’t know about you, but I’m giddy knowing even Mickey Mouse is saying fuck off to the patriarchal bullshit.
This is a serious diss to Georgia, considering the southern state is the third largest production spot in the country. Georgia – sometimes known as Y’allywood – has produced huge blockbusters including The Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame in recent years, not to mention hosting The Walking Dead for nearly a decade.
It’s worth noting that the ramifications of the boycott will be bloody painful for Georgia if media companies follow through. I mean, Y’allywood is home to 92,000 jobs in TV production resulting in $9 billion USD in economic revenue in the past year.
And even celebrities like Amy Schumer and Alec Baldwin are writing to the governors saying they will never do business in Georgia if their government continues to impinge on women’s rights. Yet the celebrity with the strongest voice in this game is actress Alyssa Milano.
So fuck on! Yes! We’ve earned our right to sexual pleasure.
But remember, they’re also trying to take away our access to birth control. If you get pregnant & exercise your right to choose your own destiny & healthcare, you may be thrown in prison. #SexStrike #SorryNotSorry

Georgia is one of the many states in the US passing a “heartbeat bill”, which places a ban on abortions after 6 weeks. This bill not only places a cap on abortions, it also redefines what a foetus is considered in the womb by altering the definition of “natural persons” to include an unborn child. A woman seeking an abortion or a doctor providing one is then, technically, committing manslaughter.
And look, the good news to come out of this whole trash fire is that Georgia is still figuring out what their new law means. So while the legal penalties aren’t definite, now’s the time to raise our voices against these changes.
Media giants threatening to halt business in Georgia is absolutely the power move for women’s rights in the states.
