Miley Cyrus Is At It Again But This Time With Some Shitty Bi-Erasure

No, queer women aren’t gay because they can’t find the right man. They’re gay because they’re gay.

For all those who treated Miley Cyrus as a queer icon, I am sorry for your loss.

Miley just said some really wacky shit on Instagram, and by wacky I mean homophobhic and bi-erasing. Which doesn’t make any sense because Miley herself has identified as queer and been super cool about queerness and the fluidity of sexuality in the past – one of the few things I actually like about her.

During her Instagram live video, Miley was gushing over Cody Simpson (honestly, that needs an entire article of it’s own), and then started to talk mad shit about ex-husband Liam Hemsworth by saying Cody is the only nice man she’s ever met in her life. Okay Miley.

Look, Miley’s public derision towards Liam Hemsworth is uncomfortable at best and downright shitty at worst, but I’m not going to pretend that I know enough about the two of them to care. What I do care about, and find incredibly fucking gross, is what Miley said after her passive aggressive Liam-bashing.

“There are good men out there, guys, don’t give up,’ she said

“You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with dicks out there, you’ve just got to find them. You’ve got to find a dick that’s not a dick, you know.

‘I always thought I had to be gay, because I thought all guys were evil, but it’s not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have d**ks. I’ve only ever met one, and he’s on this live.”

Um, what the fuck?

Hate to break it to you Miley, but gay women are not gay because they can’t find a good man. They are gay because they are gay. They love women.

I’m going to discuss a) men = dicks/trans-erasure and b) the whole thing about women choosing to be gay because they hate men, as I assume surely we know better in this cursed year of 2019. So, next point.

Suggesting that there are good men who are the solutions to women who are so desperate for romance that they have turned to other women is… incredibly undermining of queer women’s validity and sexuality, to put it lightly. Women aren’t just dating other women until they find the right man. That’s not how this works.

This whole situation reeks of internalised homophobia – the idea that you were only gay because you had to be under those circumstances, but now everything is alright because you’ve found a member of the opposite sex to fix your problem.

Now, let’s talk about the bi-erasure here. Bisexual and pansexual (which Miley identified as) people are constantly having to fight this battle, in 2019 even. There’s constantly this idea that you only love either men or women, not both – and it’s upheld by both homophobes and people from the actual LGBT community too.

There’s this gross discourse about having to “pick a side” and choose to either be gay or straight. It’s fucked, completely disregards the fluidity and validity of diverse sexuality, and pretends that people choose their sexuality.

It’s super disappointing to see this from Miley, who many have praised for her previous casual and, dare I say it, woke comments on women’s sexuality in the past. She’s said some really great things about hetero-relationships not degrading your queer identity, and I’m so confused as to how she jumped from that to this ridiculous bi-erasure today.

She told Vanity in 2018:

“A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality.”

Let’s hope there’s some kind of explanation for the absolute bullshit she was spouting on this livestream, because right now this is looking pretty darn gross. Miley, what’s good?
