NSW Police Can Now Issue $1K Fines, 6 Months In Jail If You Don’t Practice Social Distancing

Stay inside ffs.

In some pretty big (and honestly welcome) news, police can now fine you up to $1,000 if you don’t practice social distancing. That’s right fellow isolaters, a cool grand of cash you definitely don’t have, right into the government’s pocket if you don’t keep your distance.

Honestly, some will be thinking this should be a general society rule, coronavirus or not. And it ain’t necessarily hard to disagree given how many idiots still roam the beaches and run events with minimal fucks given.

And to rub it in, they also have the power to send you to jail for six months. SIX MONTHS!

The rule is currently only in NSW, but wide-scaling police laws are expected to come into place for other states and territories in the coming days/weeks.

It’s even worse if you’re a business – looking at you corporate offices – that isn’t practising social distancing; a possible $5,000 fine.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller announced the new crackdowns, and the fines will apply if:

  • Any person or business doesn’t quarantine for 14 days after coming back from overseas
  • Any person or business doesn’t comply with laws on banned gatherings of more than 100 people indoors or over 500 people outdoors
  • Any person or business doesn’t comply with event acceptances including; outdoor fitness groups of ten people and under, weddings of up to five people and under, and funerals of up to ten people and under.

So yeah, unless you’re uber rich and don’t have enough problems as is, don’t risk it. The new rules are set to come into effect from midnight tonight.
