Some Wholesome News: A Dog In Brisbane Just Birthed A Record-Breaking 21 Puppies

SO. MANY. PUPPIES.

So, I just rewatched 101 Dalmations recently with my little sister, and was relieved to realise that the dogs didn’t actually have 99 puppies – they had 15, and then adopted the rest. Which makes sense since I was fairly sure dogs don’t have more than 10-15 pups at a time.

Well, jokes on me because Shadow the Neapolitan Mastiff, a doggo in Brisbane, just gave birth to a whopping 21 puppies!

The vets that took care of Shadow and got her through the births are super happy for her, and it’s a bright ray of sunshine amidst all the COVID-19 related news.

Shadow initially gave birth to three puppies at home, but after four hours with no action and a pup that didn’t survive the birth, her owners took her to an emergency vet clinic.

“We took radiographs straight after Shadow’s arrival to see if any more puppies were on the way and made the amazing discovery of 10 plus puppies inside! We quickly checked the fetal heartbeats, and were praying for the best outcome for her,” said veterinarian Dr Patrycja Zimmermann.

Shadow had to get an emergency caesarian and a life-saving surgery on her reproductive organs to survive the birth, but she is now happy and safe. Of her 21 puppies, 18 survived and her human parents are super proud.

While Shadow didn’t beat the Guinness World Record of 24 pups, she did beat the Aussie record of 19 pup –  which was previously held by both Melody the Dalmatian in Albury, and Minnie the American bulldog.

Honestly, to think this good gal had more pups than the couple in 101 Dalmations (pre-adoption) is wild, and just the wholesome and adorable news we need right now. You can see more pics of her little cuties here.
