Let’s face it, horror movies aren’t for everyone. Some people just don’t have the balls to cope with constantly being on the edge of your seat. But for those who are game enough, there’s a few top contenders flying in quicker than you know. Here’s for those who keep up to date with the latest and greatest horrors on the horizon.
“Us” 28th March
Academy Award-winner Jordan Peele’s second horror film is expected to shine following the success of Get Out in 2017. Us follows the story of a family’s peace and tranquility disrupted and turned to sheer horror when a family of doppelgängers preys upon them. Peele has become the latest king of psychological horror and Us is said to be no exception. It also holds a unanimous 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – no pressure.
“Pet Sematary” 4th April
A Stephen King classic gets a modern spin from directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes, Holiday). Early reviews are already praising the film as a remake worth watching. If you haven’t seen the OG, the story follows a family who move into a house sitting on Native American burial grounds. This zombie-meets-paranormal story gets a modern-day switch up yet remains true to its roots. Time to go back and watch the orig if you haven’t already, but warning: you may not view cats and babies the same way ever again.
“The Curse of La Llorona” 18th April
The Curse of La Llorona by Michael Chaves and (local!) horror expert James Wan is another one to add to the watchlist. If you’re unsure about the origins of La Llorona, it is worth the research. A prominent tale in Hispanic folklore, La Llorona is said to have drowned her children and now spends eternity searching for them. Many have claimed to hear her shrieks and cries, and seen her walk along the rivers looking for her children. There’s some skepticism around how this important folklore will be represented but is expected to be a typical Conjuring-style film with no shortage of thrilling jump scares.
“Eerie” 2nd May
This Filipino horror film follows a Catholic nunnery being threatened by the presence of a woman who tragically dies on the grounds. Paranormal meets found audio recordings to birth the ultimate horror atmosphere. If you’re not a fan of subtitles, however, you might want to skip this one. (Weiners –ed.) This film remains in its native Tagalog. We can’t wait to see this one.
This year is expected to bring out some serious bangers in the horror genre, so keep your eyes Jordan Peele’d for the upcoming hits.
