So apparently we are getting a new Sonic movie, and well … it’s something alright.
The classic Sonic ring sound effect of the 90s instantly ignited a childhood excitement I didn’t know I still had, which pretty much died a minute into the trailer.
My misgivings for a live action Sonic are likely to be proven in this godforsaken movie, and it all starts with Sonic’s teeth.
Why are they so weird and human-like? And why does he look like he’s from Whoville? The teeth make him look creepy and unsettling.
The more I look at him, the more I’m reminded of the monkey-kid from Jumanji:
Sonic’s straight up freaky design paired with Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ gives me so many questions. Who thought this was a good idea? I demand answers.
Also, WTF is going on with Dr Robotnik’s costuming?
He’s just Jim Carrey with a moustache slapped on. It’s disappointing.
However there is one thing to be excited for. The initial costuming look might suck, but Jim Carrey is a gem. His transformation as shown in the end of the trailer could be fun. The end result looks well done and actually pretty accurate (or as accurate as you can get in a live action adaptation).
Plus, the action scenes seem kinda cool?
Maybe the movie has potential to be fun, despite the god-awful Sonic design. Or maybe we’re just trying to convince ourselves to find something good in this hell-dream of a trailer to save our childhood.
