The Ultimate Destinations For The Budget Backpacker

Unfortunately, the costs of modern day Australia don’t exactly permit us avid travellers to travel the globe in luxury style. From rent, to food, to bills, the day-to-day expenses don’t always make it easy for us to save for our long desired city hop through Europe. But what if I told you that such travel plans are within your reach. There are plenty of places around the world where you can easily backpack for just a few dollars a day, from Africa to Asia and even some lush European locations. No promises for exclusive nights at the best boutique hotels here, but trust me, you’re in for the experiences of a lifetime. Imagine yourself travelling across picturesque waters to reach authentic cuisines, whilst soaking up interesting culture along the way. For the same price as Ikea furniture, you could spend two weeks hiking the grand mountains of Nepal or the scenic jungles of Nicaragua. So pack your bags and get ready to accumulate some awesome backpacking experiences, minus breaking the bank.

Albania

If it’s beautiful Mediterranean views, architecture and culture that you seek, Albania you will find. Forget the expenses of the Greek Islands or the Italian capital; Albania is the perfect alternative that isn’t labelled with an expensive price tag. Of course, like any developing countries there are a few things to watch out for, but smart travellers make for good travellers. Be sure to come prepared with a travel book, so you can map out your best routes across the country. Restaurant meals will set you back at around five bucks and a room will cost you around 20 dollars a night. If you’re all about adventure, wild camping is the way to go.

Nicaragua

Despite the English friendly nature of Costa Rica, it’s increasing popularity has seen a great spike in prices. So why not pop over to it’s neighbour Nicaragua, featuring all the Central American charm for backpackers, without the hefty prices. An average hostel room will cost you about 18 Aussie dollars a night, and once you head into the smaller towns, prices are even cheaper (if you’re about that off the beaten track lifestyle). Street meals are the way to go, authentic Central and South American foods, costing you no more than two bucks. Be sure to explore Mangua, the scenic capital and head to the coastline for surfing, fishing and water activities galore.

Nepal

If you’re a well-seasoned backpacker and you still haven’t hit Nepal, well now is your time to hop on a plane and get yourself to Kathmandu (boasting the worlds second cheapest hostel). If you’re ready to hit new heights the country has some of the world highest peaks and thousands of kilometres of trekking trails. Best of all, the trails are filled with lodges, temples and houses so there is plenty to see and experience along the way. The Nepali people are warm and welcoming, but be wary of the development issues that Nepal faces. Embrace the cheap tourism that the country offers, but don’t take advantage.

Malawi

While a plane ticket to Africa may set you back, the continent has plenty to offer the backpacker on a budget. Malawi is surprisingly cheap; you can survive for literally less than $20 a day. Be sure to visit Lake Malawi for breathtaking views and take your peak at the spectacular wildlife along the way of your travels. Be sure to execute smart travel in the country, but be prepared to embrace the Malawian friendliness and the geographical diversity.

Estonia

Backpacking the Scandinavian and Nordic countries might be a little out of your reach, with high prices and bad exchange rates. But, if you’re still keen to experience the Scandinavian culture, look for its hybrid with Baltic, Russian and European influence in Estonia. The capital is Tallinn, home to the UNESCO heritage listed Old Town, where a bed will cost you about ten dollars a night. Be sure to embrace the energetic nightlife of the country, you’ll be heading home from most nights with the sun rising.

Cambodia

Talk about a backpacker’s paradise, Cambodia is warm, friendly, culturally diverse and extremely affordable. Head to Seam Reap to experience culture and history, of course touring around the temples of Angkor Wat, where accommodation will set you back at a maximum of ten dollars a night. Sihanoukville is home to some of the best beach parties and the world’s cheapest accommodation. Be sure to eat up delicious local eats and fresh seafood. If it’s hustle and bustle you’re in need of, Phnom Penh, the countries capital, hosts markets, nightlife, shopping and religious temples. So what are you waiting for?

Canada

You probably didn’t expect to find this country on the list, but we guarantee, there are plenty of pockets of Canada where you’ll find a bang for your buck. Montreal is incredibly backpacker friendly, with hostel prices starting at around $15 a night. Hitting the country in the summer months will save you heaps of extra cash. Outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking will mean you get to experience the natural beauty and diversity of Canada without the splurge.

Armenia

Travelling through the Middle East, for some is an apprehensive travel destination, however, Armenia is an incredible country to backpack around; nearly every town hosts budget hostels. Food is cheap too, meals setting you back around five dollars. This country has a very long and diverse history so be sure to visit museums and monasteries while you’re there. The landlocked nation might not have lavish coastlines to offer, but the landscape offers spectacular mountain ranges and lush greenery with rivers flowing between.
