She’s starred in Juno, Inception and is the host of her own VICE show, Gaycation. Ellen Page continues to hold a special place in pop culture’s heart. And she’s just called the fuck out of the US government as the incredible LGBTQ+ Rights activist she is.
The 5’1″ pocket rocket slammed homophobic polititians in her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert over the weekend. In a charged and emotional interview, the actress gave Pence and the government the royal dressing down they deserve.
Page tearfully referenced the recent attack on openly gay actor Jussie Smollett, condemning the harmful rhetoric spouted by the country’s leaders which have influenced this damaging social behaviour. “If you’re in a position of power and you hate people, and you want to cause suffering to them, and you spend your career trying to cause suffering, what do you think is going to happen? Kids are going to be abused, and they’re going to kill themselves, and people are going to be beaten on the street.”
As host of VICE show Gaycation, Page spent around 2 years travelling the world, meeting members of the LGBTQ+ community. The show looks into their day to day experiences and the way they’re perceived in their local communities. This has opened her eyes to the effects of governmental based persecution of the LGBTQ+ Community. “I have travelled the world, and I have met the most marginalised people you can meet. I am lucky to have this time and the privilege to say this.”
“This needs to fucking stop.”
The current opinions and rhetoric of members of the US government is threatening to LGBTQ+ rights within the United States. After a record couple of years for the social rights of the community, this is a dangerous step in the wrong direction.
