We’re Getting A SpongeBob Prequel Series About His Childhood And It Looks Cute AF

And it’s CGI animated

Okay, so, in case you’re like me and think SpongeBob Squarepants peaked with the original movie in 2004, you probably don’t know about all the other side-shows and sequels.

There’s actually a CGI animated movie called The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run that seems to be about SpongeBob going to save a snail-napped Gary but gambling instead (??) which is due to come out in May.

However, Nickelodeon has just announced ANOTHER SpongeBob series – a 13 episode prequel, about a 10 year old SpongeBaby!

Does anyone know how old SpongeBob is meant to be right now? Me neither. But that’s beside the point.

The prequel is called Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, which as a title, if you ask me, sounds weirdly ominous.

It’s meant to be super cute though – the movie will revolve around SpongeBob attending a “fateful” summer camp with all the usual culprits, and there’ll be a lot of “building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest.”

All the usual characters will be there, with a presumably baby Patrick too – although I really can’t imagine Squidward as also being young (maybe an emo teenage camp leader Squidward??).

If you go back and watch the trailer above, you’ll see that it actually has a flashback of SpongeBob at the camp, where he first met and adopted Gary. Don’t ask me about the narrative inconsistency of changing Camp Coral to Kamp Koral, because I really have no idea why that was necessary.

Either way though, SpongeBaby is endearing AF and I can’t wait to watch an adorable (perhaps first) meeting with little Patrick.

The show is set to air in July 2020 on Nickelodeon, and it may just be what pulls me back to the SpongeBob universe.
