After another tragic gun-related shooting in the US last week, American comedian Jon Stewart gave probably one of the best critiques on violence in the United States.
What’s alarmingly ironic about the video – which has been doing the rounds over the weekend – is that Stewart makes so much sense, and he is considered a comedian or an ‘entertainer’.
A gaping racial wound, that will not heal – yet we pretend doesn’t exist.
There is no doubt that he is those things – and a good entertainer at that. But his interpretation, delivery and expression on this incident – which resulted in nine parishioners being shot dead in a church in Charleston – is simply not as widespread as it should be.
The interesting paradox of the situation though was telling. Stewart mentions at one point;
“I’m confident, though, that by acknowledging it, by staring into that and seeing it for what it is, we still won’t do jackshit.”
The audience laughs – and that just about sums it up.
