A Definitive List Of All The Problematic Shit Shane Dawson Is Getting Cancelled For

I had a traumatising childhood too but I didn’t manifest my trauma into Blackface.

Trigger warning: mentions of pedophilia, rape and child abuse.

Anyone who has ever been on the internet knows who Shane Dawson is. The YouTuber first launched his streaming career in 2008 when he created “Shane Dawson TV” on YouTube.

He was basically a shock jock, doing all kinds of problematic and often fucked-up things that got him the attention and following he currently has. It was a perfect example of “all press is good press”, until now.

Shane Dawson has now come under fire for so many things at once, it’s hard to keep track. What we do know though, is that he is officially cancelled (bless), with YouTube finally demonetising his account.

Blackface And Saying The N-Word

Hoo, boy. SO. Shane Dawson pretty much built his fame on Blackface. Literally, he painted his face to play racist Black stereotype Shanaynay, amongst a bunch of other racially stereotyped characters, and it’s a huge chunk of what propelled him to stardom.

Shane also frequently and proudly said the N-word, and despite apologising for Blackface, he still kept his videos up and made ad revenue off them as recently as last week.

Rape Jokes

Sigh. There are so many of these. Like, so many. More than I ever care to list. The YouTube series Hey It’s Milly has enough to make anyone puke.

The entire video is just awful, cringe sexualisation of a child puppet. Towards the end Shane’s character puts a gun to 8-year-old puppet Milly’s mouth, who then reveals she was sexually abused when she was three while she begins sucking on it and moaning. It’s really disturbing and distressing content, and more so when you remember that none of these videos were under an age restriction on YouTube.

Child Sexualisation And Accusations of Pedophilia

In a 2013 podcast, Shane Dawson referred to a 6-year-old cheerleader as “sexy” when discussing her Instagram account, and also gave a “justification” of pedophilia.

“And she shows me her Instagrams which are like—first of all— I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this but, like, she’s, like, sexy,” he says in the poddy.

Naturally his co-host is pretty shocked, but Shane goes on to give a “justification” for pedophilia.

“First of all, let me just say, having sex with children, or touching children, or anything of that nature is terrible, and you should not do it,” he said.

“Here’s my thing,” he continues. “People have foot fetishes. People have fetishes about, you know, everything. And there’s websites on the internet where they can look at that weird creepy shit and jerk off to it. Okay, fine, everybody do your thing.”

“So why is it when somebody, looks at — googles like, “naked baby” on Google, and jerks off to it, they can get arrested?” Shane finished.

He immediately stated that he was joking, but many listeners were pretty horrified by the “joke” and began questioning how they could even be discussing this. Fans of Shane Dawson claim he was just being a shock jock and purposely saying controversial things to make the co-host uncomfortable.

Add this to leaks of videos where Shane Dawson sexualises his 12 year old cousin and the resurfacing of a video where Shane Dawson is pretending to masturbate to an 11-year old Willow Smith, and now everyone is feeling mighty suss about the constant child sexualisation, joking or not.

A Really Shitty Apology

After all this bullshittery, Shane Dawson uploaded an apology video on YouTube titled “Taking Accountability” in which he basically admits that he said and did some fucked up things and that he’s sorry.

Shane kept saying things like “I would never do that”, and “that wasn’t me”, except it was him and he did do those things, leaving many viewers feeling that his apology was self-centred and lacked true accountability.

While some people were content the apology, others were not – with one YouTube commenter even breaking down the apology to show how flawed and self-centred it really was:

“Manipulation”

Tati Westbrook had a sizeable following of her own when she got involved in the latest YouTube drama storm, but to be honest I’d never heard of her. Basically she’s a beauty blogger who started her own vitamin brand, and then got in major beef with fellow YouTube personality James Charles (who is no stranger to problematic behaviour) because he betrayed her by advertising with her competitors. This might not seem like huge drama, but it was. The whole showdown was very dramatic, there were lots of tears, etc etc.

Now Tati has come out and said Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star manipulated her and created this drama, calling them toxic. Honestly, at this point YouTube drama is pointless to me, and this seems like just another hoax because of Shane Dawson’s live Instagram reaction.

BUT, I’m mentioning it because Tati’s fans are now also coming for Shane and calling him a manipulative shit stirrer in the latest controversy surrounding him.

Obviously, this is nowhere near as bad as Blackface and pedophilia accusations, but hey – since when did YouTube react to anything proportionately?

Anyway, congrats – you’re all caught up on the main elements of Shane Dawson’s drama. Now his content has been demonetised and he’s losing subscribers by the million – though how he had so many in the first place is pretty concerning TBH.
