In a massive boost if you, or someone you know, has needed elective surgery, IVF or more specific medical treatment – you’ll be able to access it after this weekend.
It was the first ‘big’ announcement from ScoMo in a while, and of course featured his now trademark waffle intro about how Aussies are the best ever (yawn). But the main news on elective surgery will come as a pretty big relief for people in need.
And if you’re wondering what some of the types of surgery that includes, think breast reconstruction and support, dental work like fillings, dentures, braces – as well as knee, hips, shoulder replacements.
It represents about a 25% re-opening of all surgeries according to Health Minister, Greg Hunt. Hunt also mentioned that there has been a 0.5% increase in COVID-19 cases across the country – which is a huge slowdown.
Summary of ScoMo’s presser:
🦠Long winded intro
🦠“The Virus writes it’s own rules”
🦠Elective surgery to restart after Anzac Day
🦠Tells off Aged Care sector & Schools for being too rigorous in the application of the advice he didn’t explain clearly

We’ve seen states like South Australia report no new cases for a couple of days now, so it’s an overall positive step.
We’ll also be getting a tonne of masks and ventilators delivered to our shores to help with this re-opening of elective surgery.
Australia now has its hands on extra 160m masks which supports return to elective surgery.
3260 extra ventilators from Resmed.
Achieved national goal of 7500.— Gareth Parker (@G_Parker) April 21, 2020
We’ve been so caught up in COVID concerns that it’s honestly so easy to forget how many daily and weekly medical procedures are needed by people across the country. So definitely sending our love and thoughts to everyone still needing some form of medical help out there!
It continues the minor-sense of positive news, meaning that we are oh-so-slowly on the mend and about to enter a wider recovery period.
