Getting dumped is never fun for anyone. Okay, let’s face it, it freaking sucks. You’ve just invested however long into a relationship and loving someone, only to have them turn around and shit all over your heart. Getting over a break up can be one of the hardest things to do, but it can also have unexpected positives. Especially when the world keeps turning and external responsibilities don’t stop for you to nurse your heart back to health.
It can be all too easy to fall into an unending spiral of sadness and comfort food. But it doesn’t have to be the total end of the world. So we’ve hooked up with our mates at headspace to bring you our Swipe Right series, and with it some tips and tricks to make sure you don’t lose your head. We’ll get through this together.
Take Time For Yourself
You’ve just been through some shit. Spending some time just coming to terms with everything and healing yourself is one of the most important steps. If your friends are trying to get you to come partying, you’re allowed to say no. If you feel like you just need to roll up in a blanket burrito and watch movies on a Friday night, do it! Just let the people who love you know that you just need to heal for a bit.
Try To Keep Busy
Idle hands make idle minds. During the day, try to occupy yourself with things that are totally unrelated. Whether that’s throwing yourself into work or picking up a new hobby, keeping your mind occupied will help stop you from dwelling too much. Do something that is so encompassing that you have literally no room in your head for anything else. Maybe even catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a while, and request that you speak about nothing relationship based. Have a rant about work. Laugh about old times. Drink coffee and see a movie (comedy, not romance).

Don’t Block People Out
Keeping things bottled up is never a good move. You’ll probably be feeling a lot of feelings. Sadness, anger, maybe even confusion. These are all natural reactions. Allow yourself to feel these, but don’t let them become too overwhelming. Giving yourself the opportunity to open up and talk to someone trusted can help ease the weight enormously. They say a problem shared is a problem halved. Give yourself a break and let someone help carry the weight for a little bit. It will help a lot, I promise.
Remember That This Feeling Is Temporary
I know that when it’s fresh, it can feel like your pain will never go away. It’s easy to feel like the rest of your life will forever be tainted with heartbreak and you’ll never be happy again. But the truth is, that’s just not the case. Heartbreak is temporary. Yes it hurts now. Yes you feel like your heart is ripped open. But your heart will heal and you’ll love again.
At the end of the day, even though going through a break up totally sucks, it’s something that pretty much everyone will go through in their lives. You’re not alone in this at all, ever. There are always people who will be there to support you in whatever way you need. Healing is a personal journey and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Hopefully these tips will help the healing along.
